3.    Review Job Leads and Target Potential Employers

In order to conduct a successful job search, you will need to take an active approach and discover where the opportunities are in your occupational field and whom to contact. This information is available in local newspapers, yellow pages, employer directories, professional journals, company literature, and organizational web sites. Use for instance the following resources to establish a list of potential employers:

  • Look in your local newspapers to find job listings or job fairs where employers gather to search for new employees.

  • Have a look in the Yellow Pages or other phone directories to find local employers or employment agencies.

  • Use your network contacts in order to find new opportunities.

  • Use business directories at your local library.

  • Use internet all-in-one Job Banks to identify potential employers and Post your Resume in the most important Job Search Engines of your country.

  • Check out self-employment opportunities and work at home jobs.  Try not just "hanging around" - be active! There are a lot of opportunities to make money during your unemployment time, many of those with the potential of being your own boss in the future.

  • Search the most powerful Search Engines of the Web

Recently, very powerful all-in-one search engines have been developed (like Indeed, Wowjobs or Trovit) which enable browsing job openings of thousands of job boards with one single search. You get all jobs published at top sites like Monster, AmericanJobBank, CareerBuilder, Jobster or USJobBank as well as from small, niche sites in just about every career field you can imagine. We compared the performance of the most used Job Search Engines in the USA, England and Canada and found that Indeed is "indeed" the very most powerful job search engine of the web these days with frequently more than 10 times more job offers in specific career fields than the competitors Monster & co.

Post your Resume in the Internet

Apart from searching the web for job opportunities, posting you resume online can multiply your possibilities to find a job quickly. You can start to post your resume manually to the major job search engines or use the service of one of the many commercial resume posting services. Most trusted services are ZHive (USA), Executive Trumpet  (US, Canada) and CVTrumpet (UK). You will only need to fill in just one form to have your resume distributed to 1000's of recruiters, head-hunters and recruitment agencies. Before you start distributing your resume though, you must ensure that your resume is as good as it can possibly be for your job search (see chapter 4).
