Most important factors to consider:

• What is the net interest rate I have to pay? The interest rate defines if your credit is cheap or expensive and how long you need to pay it back.
• Is the amount you promise to pay each month realistic? There's no point setting up a short repayment term if it means you can't pay the electricity bill or buy the weekly groceries.
• Is a personal loan really the best solution for you? Usually personal loan interest rates are in the range of 7% and 15%. Instead, mortgage fixed rates can be found as less as 5%. If you need more than about $20.000 it's worth thinking very carefully that a mortgage might be the better solution than a personal loan.
• If you consider a mortgage loan, you should know that mortgage lenders are more than ready to extend existing mortgages or they try to tempt customers to change lenders. If your property increased in price in the last years, you might still have a large amount of equity in your home that can be used to extend your credit line. RISK: if you can't keep up with the bigger monthly repayments you run the risk of loosing your home!
• Look for introductory offers for credit cards (often free of interest for a certain period of time) as these many times undercut the costs of a personal loan. If you have the discipline to pay off the loan within the interest free period, this is by far the cheapest and most effective way for smaller amounts of borrowing.
• Read the small print on a loan contract! This is of fundamental importance if you are on a fixed-term contract or self-employed. You might discover that you are not covered when your employment contract is not renewed, your business dries up or even if you fell ill and are unable to work. Your lender possibly won't tell you this when you sign the contract, but be sure they won't have trouble telling you when they come to make a claim!
